Background: Immunization in infants is an action that can affect to trauma because it can cause pain. One of the techniques of non-pharmacological pain management is breastfeeding. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Breastfeeding on pain reduction in infant’s immunization.
Methods: The study was use the observasional design method and sampling techniques using purposive sampling, the amount of samples is containing from 30 respondents, 15 respondents were breastfeeding group. 15 were non breastfeeding group who are given the immunization in PUSKESMAS Kasihan Yogyakarta. To examine the level of pain used pain scales FLACC. The analyzing of differences in pain response is measured by the Independent Sample t-Test.
Results: The results showed the average level of pain in infants as measured by pain scales FLACC in the breastfeeding group is 4.53. Where as in the non breastfeeding group the average pain level was 7.93. Results of statistical tests indicate the 95% significance level obtained p=0.000, the average level of pain in breastfed infants is lower than infant who are not breastfed when immunization injections.
Conclusion: This study shows that breastfeeding infants who performed immunization can reduce pain that measured with FLACC pain scale (p = 0.000), while immunization injection in infants who was given a breastfeed is lower than in infants who are not breastfeed.
Suggestion: In the provision of nursing action is need for pain management techniques and the application of atraumatic care to provide comfort to clients both in the Primary Health Center or Hospital. Breastfeeding as a non-pharmacological pain techniques need to be socialized, because has many positive benefits for infants. A pediatric nurse practitioner who can perform appropriate pain management techniques for infants before immunization injections or other invasive procedure that causes onset of pain, in action need the collaboration with other health care team
